Trauma Informed Psychotherapy
"Psychotherapy that does not address the body is like pulling a weed and leaving the root."
-Erica Hornthal

Therapy is a challenging and rewarding process. Getting to know you and establishing a strong working relationship is the foundation of my approach, and I am passionate about helping people recognize their strengths. My practice is strengths-based and trauma-informed.

My practice is informed by polyvagal theory, which focuses on the function of the vagus nerve and our autonomic nervous system in our emotional health. Our physiological state influences our story. Interventions are aimed at restoring fluid functioning of our autonomic nervous system and vagus nerve to move us into regulation and an embodied sense of safety; to restore our rhythm. I work collaboratively to create a unique therapy for every patient, drawing on cognitive-behavioral, dialectical behavioral, narrative, somatic, expressive, and psychodynamic approaches. I enjoy incorporating music, art, drumming, and humor in therapy.

Sessions often include education about the effects of stress and trauma on the brain and body that affect our emotional health. This includes education about ACE (Adverse Childhood Experiences), PTSD, complex trauma, developmental trauma, and vicarious trauma based on the work of many leaders in the field of traumatology. I have found that education about the many emotional and physical effects of trauma helps people make sense of their experiences and remove much of the shame that can be a barrier to seeking or making progress in therapy.

I have worked with the Vermont Association of Mental Health and Addiction Recovery, providing training on motivational interviewing, group facilitation, and compassion fatigue associated with secondary trauma. I also advocate at the Vermont Statehouse, testifying before various legislators on mental health issues and funding for needed services.

I received my master's degree in clinical mental health counseling from Johnson State College in May 2015.I am a Level two Certified Clinical Trauma Professional, and Remo HealthRHYTHMS trained facilitator. I am a Vermont licensed clinical mental health counselor and have been in practice for 8 years in a private practice setting. For a full list of my training and work experience, please see:
